Celebrating the New Rothwell Build

A celebration has been held to mark the opening of a brand new centre for the Rothwell Fulfilling Lives Service.  The service was previously delivered from two buildings on Holmsley Lane, Woodlesford which began life as Eastfield Special School.

The development, commissioned at a cost of £2m by Leeds City Council, saw the ‘west building’ demolished to make way for a brand new, bespoke centre, designed to cater for 50 customers per day, many with the most complex health and care support needs.

The purpose-built specialist facilities include dedicated rooms for physiotherapy, sensory experiences, rebound therapy, life skills, medical interventions, quiet space and creative arts.  At the heart of the building sits a beautiful courtyard which enables people with a learning disability to socialise and independently access the outdoor space safely.

The centre has been operating since April, but the official opening ceremony was held last week attended by around 50 people including representatives from Aspire Community Benefit Society, Leeds City Council, contractors, partners, customers and staff, as well as Councillors Lisa Mulherin, Stewart Golton, David Nagle and Adam Ogilvie.

Cllr. Lisa Mulherin, Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said:

“It’s fantastic to see these new facilities and the difference it’s making to people’s lives.  The beautiful building here today provides excellent facilities for some our citizens with the most complex needs.”

Andy Rawnsley, Chief Executive of Aspire Community Benefit Society said:

“This journey has taken 6 years and the nice thing is we’re finally here.  Although we’re here to celebrate the opening of a building, everything about the service that we offer is actually down to people and it’s always going to be about people in the kind of work we do.  That’s the most important thing.”

Customers and staff have settled quickly into the new building and love the space and state-of-the-art facilities that it provides.

Further events are planned around Christmas to give family carers an opportunity to see the new building for themselves.
