The End is Nigh!

We are now delivering the final phase of our day services modernisation.  The programme began in the south of the Leeds in 2009.  Since then we’ve opened 21 community bases across the city, and 2015 has been a busy year with the opening of four of these new services.

Continuing our successful partnership working with Leeds City Council’s sports and leisure department, we have opened two further new community bases located within Leisure Centres: one at Fearnville Leisure Centre which launched in January, closely followed in February by one at Scott Hall Leisure Centre.  Customers undertake educational and leisure activities at the bases plus take full advantage of the extensive range of sports facilities available at the leisure centres.  This has vastly improved opportunities for people with learning disabilities to participate in healthy sporting activity in the heart of their community.

April saw the long awaited opening of the newly built day centre at Rothwell.  This fantastic resource enables us to provide a service for customers with profound learning disabilities and complex health needs.  Then in July we opened our second new base at Technorth in Chapel Allerton in order to meet demand for places following the successful opening of our first community base there.

Work will begin at the end of September on two more new community bases – one at Barleyfields Community Centre in Wetherby, the other at Cross Gates Community Centre.  These are scheduled to be ready by the end of the year.

The activity will continue in 2016 because we plan to open another community base at Richmond Hill and completely refurbish Potternewton day centre.  The refurb work will begin early in the new year – subject to gaining the necessary approvals – and take around six months to complete.  During this time staff and customers will be temporarily re-located to Ramshead Wood.

Once Potternewton re-opens the ambitious citywide day services modernisation programme will be complete;  our best estimate is that this will be around autumn but we’ll keep you updated on progress.
