Leeds Learning Disability Week 2017

The weather is starting to improve and, as temperatures rise, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a warm and dry June. That’s because Leeds Learning Disability Week 2017 will take place. This year it will run from Monday, 19th June plus there are some extra events happening in the weeks leading up to the 19th.

This year’s programme has lots to offer, including some new activities. You can see the whole timetable by clicking on the link below.

As usual, Aspire is leading or contributing to many of the events, kicking off on Monday, 19th June with the ever popular 5-a-side football tournament at Middleton Leisure Centre. The competitive but good-natured games attract many teams, including women’s teams, and a large number of spectators. There’ll be BBQ food available to buy or bring along a packed lunch.

On Tuesday, 20th June there will be a supported sponsored walk around Swinsty Reservoir. The starting point is Swinsty Reservoir car park and everyone will set off at 11am. The route is very accessible and the scenary is beautiful. There’ll be a BBQ in the car park after the walk. All money raised from this event will go to the charity, Africa’s Gift, so don’t forget to get your sponsorship form ahead of the day.

There’ll be a trip Down Memory Lane on Wednesday, 21st June at Armley Mills from 10:30am until 2:30pm. We’ll be running the vintage tea room or you can bring your own lunch along. There’ll be films (created by Vera Media with Aspire customers) to watch, photographs to see and a tombola plus all the attractions of Armley Mills.

A first for us this year is our Dance Day which will take place at Bramley Day Service on Thursday, 22nd June. There’ll be workshops to join featuring different dance styles including line dancing, bollywood dancing, street dancing and even belly dancing. In the afternoon there’ll be a traditional tea dance and you’ll be able to buy afternoon tea. See the programme for the day by clicking on the link below.

Thursday, 22nd is also Aspire’s Customer Awards. Hundreds of nominations were received from organisations across Leeds and the winners of each of the 8 categories will be announced, together with the winners of the Photography Competition, at our glittering Awards Ceremony. Attendance for this event is by invitation only.

Picnic in the Park will be held on Friday, 23rd June (weather permitting) in the Wedding Garden at Temple Newsam Park. This is a great day for catching up with old friends and relaxing after a very busy week! In addition to the usual mix of stalls, activities and information stands, we’ll have something new this year: not only will Sky Fallers – our very own rock ‘n’ pop band – be playing live, but we’ll also have the final of the Aspire Does X Factor Competition. So do come along with your picnic and blanket to cheer on your favourite acts – you can see the running order for X Factor and other activities using the link below .

Finally, the week will be rounded off with the Wetherby Fun Day on Sunday, 25th June. This will be held at Wetherby Social Club from 11am until 3pm. There’ll be sponge throwing, a dance off competition, games and face painting plus delicious cakes to buy. See the flyer for this event by click the link below.

So, all in all, it’s going to be a fabulous Leeds Learning Disability Week 2017. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of the events.

Fingers crossed for good weather!
