Introducing ‘Customer Safety Champions’ to supported living environments for people with learning disabilities in order to promote engagement in the ‘keep me safe’ process. Customer Safety Champions then pass on their knowledge to other customers within their homes, day centres and everyday lives.
Through safety audits within supported living homes and day services for people with learning disabilities, it was identified that some customers were not engaging in practise drills or safety checks and many felt as though safety was something that ‘staff did’. This project was set up to ensure the people with disabilities that we support engage fully in safety evacuations and take an active role in ensuring their own safety and helping to ensure the safety of those within their homes and day services by training them to become Customer Safety Champions.
The aim was to ensure that customers safely evacuated premises during practice emergency drills and also to encourage customers to take part in safety checks, identify and report potential hazards and, by doing so, add to the safety ethos that Aspire encourages in all stakeholders throughout the organisation.
Customer Safety Champions will set the example to other customers in knowing how to keep safe and what to do in an emergency.
After a successful collaboration with Health and Safety and our Communications Team, easy-to-read safety checks were prepared, in-person training with group chats was held and an easy-read PowerPoint presented, customer-featured videos were shown, and afterward trainees were invited to the front to tell the class what they had learned. The whole process was interactive and enjoyed by all, and most importantly retention was impressive.
Qualifying with a certificate, a presentation event and a high-vis vest to carry on their helpful work was an added bonus to all they have achieved.
We celebrated our initial cohort of Safety Champions at an event with videos to watch, amazing quick questions across the room and speeches from Don, Paul and our special guest Cllr. Kevin Ritchie. With tea, cakes and special mention flowers shared it was a memorable event by all.

The newly qualified Safety Champions cheered and clapped and faces lit up seeing themselves on the big screen. They came to the front to accept their certificate and high-vis vest to continue their great work across our services.
Thank you to everyone involved, our amazing staff, partners and the people we support that made it all possible.
